New Poem by Poet Gerry Murphy
Mounds of Earth Mounds of Memory
(for The Kinship Project)
A grass covered mound,
like the tumulus of an ancient king,
interred during the Bronze Age
with a hundred slaves
slaughtered at his burial,
or just a heap of domestic rubbish
squeezing down into itself
under a green canopy?
Years and years of quotidian evidence,
lives of quiet desperation
or loud brassy exultation,
moulding into a dark pungent mulch.
A stinking circle of hell.
Dante forgot to mention.
